Financial Planning for a Canadian Study Permit: 2026 Student Guide
Updated: Sep 4
Last verified: September 2, 2026. This article is written for Canadian education planning and uses current IRCC information where immigration rules affect international students.
Current IRCC proof of financial support for 2026
For study-permit applications filed on or after September 1, 2026 outside Quebec, IRCC lists CAD $23,448 for one person’s first-year living expenses, CAD $29,192 for two, CAD $35,888 for three and CAD $43,572 for four. Tuition and transportation are additional. This is a proof-of-financial-support requirement, not a universal minimum bank balance.
Show where the money comes from
A strong financial presentation is factual and traceable. Explain the account holder, relationship to the student, source of savings or income, large deposits and how tuition and living costs will be paid. Do not create transactions or documents only to make an account look stronger.
Use evidence IRCC recognizes
IRCC lists several possible forms of financial evidence, including proof of a Canadian bank account when money has been transferred, a GIC from a participating financial institution, education loans, bank drafts, proof of tuition and housing payments, bank statements and sponsor letters supported by evidence. A GIC is one possible form of evidence, not a universal requirement. The right combination depends on the case.
Keep education and finances consistent
The budget should make sense for the program, city, tuition and family circumstances. A study plan should explain the education choice truthfully; it should not make unsupported promises about future immigration outcomes.
