Study permit

A study permit authorizes study in Canada under specified conditions and is not itself a visa or travel document. Students whose permit is approved before travel generally receive a port-of-entry letter of introduction and, where required, a TRV or eTA; the actual study permit is normally issued after arrival and border examination.

Visa or eTA

Depending on nationality and travel method, a student may also need a temporary resident visa or eTA to travel to Canada. U.S. citizens do not require a TRV or eTA, but still need proper travel identification and must meet entry requirements.

Entry is still assessed

Holding documents does not create an unconditional right to enter. Students should carry the documents relevant to their studies and answer border questions truthfully.

Keep school information current

If an education plan changes, verify the DLI and study permit rules before starting at a different post-secondary institution.
